The activated partial thromboplastin time (ACT) is a sensitive screening test used to assess coagulation.
Its importance: differential diagnosis of bleeding disorders, monitoring of heparin therapy, monitoring of replacement therapy in hemophilia A and B, and preoperative screening for coagulopathy.
Prolonged time: single coagulation factor deficiency, consumptive coagulopathy, heparin/hirudin therapy, acquired lupus anticoagulant therapy.
Shortened time: may indicate hypercoagulability.
