Preparation for the study
General
- The test material is blood.
- The patient must be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test it is advisable to drink a glass of water or bitter(unsweetened) tea.
Description
Vitamin B12 participates in the process of inheritance, important for nerve cells and red blood cells. Its deficiency is recognized only years later, because large amounts of cobalamin are stored in the liver, it manifests itself: macrocytic anemia and damage to the nervous system. Vitamin B12 is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
in the presence of the so-called intrinsic factor.
Importance of the test: confirmation of vitamin deficiency, search for the cause of anemia, non-specific complaints, weakness.
Abnormal values: malnutrition
in the course of alcoholic disease, hyperthyroidism, worm disease, after small bowel resection,
in newborns of vegetarian mothers.
