Preparation for the examination
General
- The material for testing is blood.
- The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.
- In pregnant patients, the test is performed between 16 and 18 weeks of pregnancy.
Knowledge of the fetal age is essential for correct interpretation of AFP test results.
Maternal serum should be collected before amniocentesis due to the risk of
falsely elevated results.
Description
AFP is synthesized primarily in the liver and embryonic vesicle of the fetus. It is usually produced by the fetus, but only in small amounts in adults. From the 4th week of pregnancy, it is detected in the amniotic fluid and blood of pregnant women.
The importance of the test: monitoring the condition of the fetus, during periods outside pregnancy and in men - a tumor marker, in primary liver tumors, germ cell tumors, monitoring treatment of patients with liver cirrhosis, and chronic hepatitis.
Abnormal values: in pregnancy (especially twins), with fetal developmental disorders, in Down syndrome, in liver and gastrointestinal tumors.
