Description of the study

Colonoscopy is a procedure to diagnose the large intestine using a flexible endoscope with a camera, called a video colonoscope, inserted slowly through the rectum into the intestine. The endoscope is gradually advanced through the entire large intestine, and in some situations even into the initial part of the small intestine. This process allows an accurate assessment of the mucosa of the lower part of the digestive tract. During a colonoscopy, a tissue sample may need to be taken for histopathological examination or to remove a polyp. The collection procedure does not cause discomfort to the patient. In general, patients tolerate colonoscopy well, and pain is rarely a side effect experienced.

Indications

  • Determine the cause of lower gastrointestinal bleeding,
  • Removal of polyps (polypectomy),
  • Chronic diarrhea or constipation,
  • Cancer diagnosis,
  • Inflammatory bowel disease,
  • Pain in the anal area, lower abdomen,
  • Preventive testing for colorectal cancer.

Contraindications

  • Possible intestinal obstruction (in this situation, the patient should visit the emergency room),
  • Antibiotic treatment-These drugs can affect the test result. The test can be performed at least 5 days after the end of antibiotic treatment.
