Description
Anti-Xa heparin activity is measured to monitor blood heparin levels in
patients with coagulation disorders (hypercoagulability) treated with unfractionated heparin, standard heparin (UFH), low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), or factor Xa inhibitors (e.g., rivaroxaban). The test is designed to monitor and optimize the dose of anticoagulant used during treatment. The test indirectly measures blood heparin levels by measuring the inhibition of factor Xa activity, one of the proteins involved in the coagulation process.
Indications for monitoring heparin treatment with the anti-Xa activity test include pregnancy, obesity, and renal failure.
