Description

The pathological condition in which albumin is present in the urine is called albuminuria. Albuminuria is a marker of renal failure, sometimes preceding symptoms of kidney damage. Measurement of urinary albumin is important in patients with diabetes and hypertension. It is performed in a casual urine sample. Attention should be paid to the possibility of falsification of the result due to excessive exercise, urinary tract infection and dehydration. When albumin concentration is expressed in terms of creatinine concentration (ACR), the urine sample is taken at any time. With such an indicator, it is assumed to be normal: ACR < 30 mg albumin/g creatinine (normoalbuminuria); elevated without signs of nephropathy: ACR 30-300 mg albumin/g creatinine (microalbuminuria) and elevated (ACR > 300 mg albumin/g creatinine (macroalbuminuria). A single result is sufficient to confirm macroalbuminuria, confirmation of microalbuminuria requires double testing. The finding of elevated urinary albumin in diabetic and hypertensive patients is associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease.
