Preparation for the examination

General

The material for testing is blood.
Approximately 30 minutes before the examination, it is recommended to drink 1 glass of water only.
The patient must fast for at least 12 hours after consuming the last meal, unless the doctor recommends otherwise (e.g. performing the test after a meal)

For children up to 3 years of age, it is recommended to collect blood half to one hour after feeding.

Description

Amylase is a component of saliva and gastric juices, breaking down complex sugars (starch and glycogen) into simple sugars. When the pancreas or salivary glands are damaged due to inflammation or stasis, amylase enters the bloodstream, and elevated serum levels can be detected.

The importance of this test: a thorough search for the cause of "unclear" abdominal pain, diagnosing pancreatic and salivary gland disorders.

Abnormal amylase values are seen in pancreatic and salivary gland disorders, biliary stasis, and kidney disorders.
