Preparation for the examination
General
- The material for testing is blood.
- The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.
- Androstenedione levels show diurnal fluctuations, reaching a maximum in the morning, and fluctuations throughout
the menstrual cycle, with a maximum near the middle of the cycle.
Description
Androstenedione is a steroid, a precursor of testosterone and estrone. Elevated androstenedione levels are associated with excessive hair growth (hirsutism) and virilization. Unlike other adrenal androgens (dehydroepiandrosphenone and its sulfate), circulating androstenedione is released from both the adrenal glands and the ovaries. Its plasma levels increase gradually from approximately age seven and then decline after age thirty. It exhibits diurnal fluctuations, peaking in the morning, and also fluctuates throughout the menstrual cycle, peaking near the midpoint. Plasma androstenedione levels increase during pregnancy.
