Preparation for the study
General

menstrual cycle with a maximum near the middle of the cycle.
Description
Androstendione is a steroid, a precursor of testosterone and estrone. Elevated levels of androstendione are combined with excessive hair growth ( hirsutism ) and virilization. Unlike other adrenal androgens (dehydroepiandrostendione and its sulfate), circulating androstendione is released from both the adrenal glands and the ovaries. Its plasma level rises gradually from about age seven and then falls after age 30. It shows diurnal fluctuations reaching a maximum in the morning, and also fluctuates within the menstrual cycle with a maximum near the middle. Plasma androstendione levels increase during pregnancy.
