Preparation for the examination
General
- The material for testing is blood.
- The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.
Description
This test is used to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
It is a diagnostic test that detects anti-citrullinated antibodies (anti-CCP) using a synthetic cyclic citrulline peptide. Compared to rheumatoid factor, the anti-CCP test demonstrates greater specificity (98%) and similar sensitivity (70-80%). Furthermore, recent reports suggest that anti-CCP antibodies may be present
in patients' serum for many years (up to 9-14 years) before the onset of the first clinical symptoms of RA, and the titer of these antibodies systematically increases as the disease approaches clinical manifestation. It is also emphasized that in patients with early-stage arthritis, the presence of these antibodies allows for the differentiation between RA and undifferentiated arthritis, even in cases with positive rheumatoid factor (RF-IgM). It is also estimated that the presence of
anti-CCP antibodies has prognostic significance, indicating an aggressive course of RA, with a tendency to significant joint destruction.
