Description

Antithrombin (AT), commonly known as antithrombin III, is the most quantitatively important blood coagulation inhibitor from the serine protease inhibitor group. In the body, it primarily serves as an anticoagulant in the coagulation system. AT is produced in the liver. The coagulation factors inactivated by AT include thrombin (IIa), IXa, Xa, XIa, and XIIa. AT activity is primarily assessed in the course of thromboembolism to detect acquired and congenital deficiencies.
Reduced AT activity is observed in congenital thrombophilia, liver disease (parenchymal damage and limited ability to synthesize proteins), nephrotic syndrome
(hyperexcretion), exudative enteropathy and severe burns (protein loss), in DIC syndrome, physiologically in premature infants and newborns, and also during chronic heparin and L-asparaginase treatment.
Elevated AT concentration has no diagnostic significance; increased AT is observed in inflammatory states (acute phase protein) and vitamin K deficiency.
