Description
Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) is a structural protein found in atherogenic lipoproteins that transport cholesterol, primarily LDL, VLDL, and lipoprotein remnants. Each LDL particle contains one Apo B molecule, so Apo B concentration reflects the total number of atherogenic lipid particles circulating in the blood.
Elevated Apo B levels increase the risk of:
• atherosclerosis,
• coronary heart disease,
• heart attack,
• stroke,
• cardiovascular complications associated with dyslipidemia.
Apo B testing is performed to:
• assess cardiovascular risk more accurately than LDL cholesterol alone,
• identify excess atherogenic lipoproteins,
• assess risk in individuals with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, or obesity,
• monitor the effectiveness of lipid-lowering treatment.
