Description

Echinococcosis is a parasitic disease caused by infection with one of two types of tapeworm – Echinococcus granulosus or Echinococcus multilocularis. The natural reservoirs of these organisms are dogs (E. granulosus) and foxes (Echinococcus multilocularis), with other potential sources of infection being food contaminated with the parasites, such as berries and mushrooms.

After the E. granulosus parasite enters the human oral cavity, it is transmitted through the bloodstream to the liver (60% of patients), lungs (20% of patients), and other organs, such as the brain (20%). The parasites form spherical, single-chamber, fluid-filled cysts that can usually be surgically removed. E. granulosus cysts cause pathological changes or disorders primarily through gradual compression due to growth or displacement of vital tissues, vessels, or organs of the host. Therefore, the extent of pathological changes varies significantly depending on the location and size of the cyst, for example, epigastric or chest pain.

The diagnosis of echinococcosis is based on epidemiological and clinical examination for the detection of cysts using radiological, ultrasound and computed tomography examinations, as well as serological methods.
