Description of the study
- without spectacle correction (without glasses): shows the actual angle of strabismus, indicates the full defect and determines how the visual defect affects the strabismus.
- With spectacle correction (wearing glasses): it allows you to assess whether strabismus is fully or partially corrected with glasses, or whether it is completely unresponsive to correction. The test is completely safe and non-invasive. It does not require the use of special preparations.
The device consists of two movable tubes, into which special images are inserted, viewed separately by each eye. The patient sits comfortably, rests their chin on a support, and looks into the device's windows. The specialist then adjusts the tubes to the appropriate angle so that the light strikes the macula centrally, enabling precise assessment of eye alignment.
During the examination, the patient observes the images with each eye separately and performs simple commands (e.g., combining elements into a single image). Based on the patient's reactions, eye movements, and the way the images are viewed, the orthoptist assesses whether the eyes are working together properly, and whether strabismus, suppression, lack of fusion, or spatial vision impairments are present. The examination is painless and is an important element of the diagnosis and treatment of binocular vision disorders. The synoptophore examination can be repeated multiple times, which is important for monitoring treatment progress and assessing the effectiveness of the implemented therapy.
