Preparation for the examination
Detailed for men
- The patient should be healthy. A cold, and especially a high temperature, can affect the results of a semen analysis.
- Before submitting a semen sample for testing, the patient should abstain from sexual intercourse for 2 to 7 days (optimal 3-4 days, but not longer than 7 days)
and from alcohol for 2 to 7 days (minimum 2 days). - Antibiotic treatment can affect semen analysis results. Patients should wait at least two weeks after their last antibiotic dose.
- It is advisable to collect semen on-site. It is possible to deliver the semen in a sterile container or one used for urinalysis (within no more than 1 hour of collection, transported at body temperature – important!).
- Material can only be brought and dropped off at the facility located in Lublin at 7 Orkana Street during designated hours.
- The sample is obtained through masturbation. Ejaculate cannot be obtained through withdrawal or a condom. Semen is collected directly into a disposable container provided at the collection center.
Important
After a vasectomy, only a basic semen analysis can be performed.
Description
The test includes an assessment of the physicochemical and biophysical properties of the semen, a microscopic evaluation of sperm – its structure, percentage and type of sperm motility, a vitality assessment – the percentage of live sperm, and HOST – an assessment of the continuity of the sperm cell membrane.
A microscopic evaluation of the preparation after special staining – its morphological structure (morphological assessment).
An additional test for treating infertility caused by sperm agglutination is the MAR-TEST, which detects autoantibodies coated on sperm.
The purpose of the test is to assess
the man's fertilizing capacity.
The test is performed according to WHO standards/norms.
