Description
Protein C is a natural inhibitor of coagulation factors V and VIII produced in the liver.
Its activation depends on the action of thrombin bound to thrombomodulin and Ca ions. This reaction occurs more rapidly in the presence of protein S.
Protein C deficiency is associated with recurrent episodes of venous thrombosis. Acquired protein C deficiency can accompany liver dysfunction, treatment with oral anticoagulants and in the course of disseminated intravascular coagulation.
