Description
Total protein includes all blood proteins. Protein partitioning is made possible by protein electrophoresis.
Due to the ability of proteins to bind water, discrepancies in the amount of protein may result from altered hydration (in which case the hematocrit is altered).
Importance of the test: information about the total amount of protein in the body, indicates kidney damage (proteinuria).
Abnormal values: liver disease, extreme malnutrition, kidney disease.
Factors that may affect the outcome of the study:
High protein concentrations can be observed in cases of severe dehydration.
Low protein concentrations can be caused by conditions such as nephrotic syndrome, massive bleeding, impaired protein absorption, severe burns, salt retention syndromes and acute protein malnutrition.
