- The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.
Description
The S100 protein is a group of calcium-binding proteins found in melanocytes and cells of the nervous system, among others. In laboratory diagnostics, the S100B subtype is most commonly measured, and is primarily used as a marker supporting the diagnosis and monitoring of malignant melanoma.
Elevated levels of the S100 protein may occur in the course of:
• malignant melanoma,
• progression or recurrence of melanoma,
metastasis,
• tumors arising from neural tissue,
• neuromas and neurofibromas,
• some brain tumors.
