Description
Protein S is a vitamin K-dependent cofactor of activated protein C. About 40% of protein S is present in the blood in the active free form,
and about 60% is bound to the binding protein C4b and therefore remains inactive.
Protein S deficiencies can be inherited or acquired. Acquired deficiency can be observed during pregnancy, oral anticoagulant therapy, oral contraception,
liver disease, in newborns, as well as in other clinical cases. Protein S deficiency can accompany a high risk of developing venous congestion especially in young people.
