Description
Physiological jaundice is the result of increased red blood cell breakdown (lysis) and hemoglobin degradation. In all newborns, jaundice appears within the first 24 hours of life. The highest total bilirubin concentration occurs on the 3rd-5th day of life and lasts for 7 days. Jaundice can persist for up to 2 weeks of life. More severe jaundice occurs in premature infants, in cases of blood type incompatibility, red blood cell enzyme defects, or other coexisting abnormalities. If jaundice appears in the first 24 hours of life and persists for more than 14 days and is associated with other symptoms, due to the neurotoxic nature of bilirubin, conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin levels should be determined to rule out potential pathologies.
The increase in total bilirubin should be less than 5 mg/dL/24 hours, and the direct (conjugated) bilirubin concentration should not exceed 20% of the total bilirubin.
