Description
A bone marrow biopsy is an invasive procedure that involves collecting bone marrow blood. In adults, bone marrow is collected through a puncture of the hip bone.
The doctor numbs the skin and periosteum, most often with lidocaine. The biopsy is performed using a special needle. The doctor inserts the needle into the bone marrow cavity using circular movements. Using a syringe connected to the needle, approximately 1-2 ml of bone marrow blood is withdrawn. The injection site is protected with a sterile gauze pad. During the aspiration, the patient may experience pain (comparable to a toothache), but the injection itself should not be painful. A
bone marrow biopsy is a test that allows for the diagnosis of certain blood disorders, particularly those of a proliferative (cancerous) nature. The biopsy results allow for precise diagnosis of the disease and the selection of the most effective treatment method.
