Description

A bone marrow biopsy is an invasive test that involves the collection of bone marrow blood. Bone marrow in adults is collected by puncturing the hip bone.
The doctor performs anesthesia of the skin and periosteum, usually with lidocaine. The biopsy is performed with a special needle. The doctor inserts it into the bone marrow cavity using circular movements, and with the help of a syringe connected to the needle draws about 1-2 ml of marrow blood, the puncture site is secured with a sterile gauze pad. During aspiration, the person examined may feel pain (similar to a toothache), while the puncture itself should not be painful.
A bone marrow biopsy is a test that makes it possible to diagnose certain blood diseases - especially those of a proliferative (cancerous) nature. The results of the biopsy allow accurate verification of the disease and selection of the most effective treatment method.
