Description
Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by the spirochete Borrelia and transmitted by the bite of one of several tick species.
The primary vector in Europe is the Ixodes pacificus tick. Most infections occur in the summer months and typically follow a three-phase course:
– early limited Lyme disease is characterized by flu-like symptoms accompanied by erythema migrans;
– early disseminated Lyme disease is characterized by multiple erythema migrans, which may be accompanied by neurological, cutaneous, or cardiac disorders;
– late Lyme disease is a chronic inflammation of the skin of the peripheral limbs (acrodermatitis), accompanied by extracutaneous disorders such as neurological, rheumatological, and cardiac disorders.
IgG antibodies indicate a history of infection.
Current recommendations for the diagnosis of tick-borne diseases recommend performing a Borrelia antibody test no sooner than
4-6 weeks after the bite.
