• The test material is blood.
• The patient does not need to be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test, it is advisable to drink a glass of water or bitter(unsweetened) tea.

Samples brought from outside are not accepted for testing.

The test detects mutations in the BRCA 2 gene that predispose to breast or ovarian cancer; the test targets women with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer.

It is estimated that if you carry the BRCA1 gene mutation, you are up to 70% likely to develop breast cancer, and up to 40% likely to develop ovarian cancer. This means a 10-fold higher probability of breast cancer and a 20-fold higher risk of ovarian cancer compared to the "average" woman. The risk associated with the BRCA2 gene mutation is lower, at about 56% for breast cancer and 27% for ovarian cancer.

Detection of the mutation (>1% of women) is an indication for more frequent checks and elimination of other risk factors (e.g. smoking, stress, hormone therapy.).
