Preparation for the study
General
- The test material is blood.
- The patient does not need to be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test, it is advisable to drink a glass of water or bitter(unsweetened) tea.
Description
It is found in normal and neoplastically altered epithelial cells of the breast gland. Elevated levels of CA 15-3 are periodically observed in certain types of breast cancer, in some lung cancers,as well as in non-cancerous conditions.
This marker is not suitable for establishing a primary diagnosis. The test is useful for detecting breast cancer recurrence in stage II and III, in remission, and for guiding patients with metastatic breast cancer by monitoring disease progression or susceptibility to treatment. Serial CA 15-3 antigen assays should be used in conjunction with other clinical methods for early detection of recurrence in stage II and III disease and in monitoring susceptibility to treatment of patients with metastatic breast cancer.
