- The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.
Description
The CA 19-9 antigen is a component of many mucosal cells and the products they secrete. In healthy individuals, CA 19-9 circulates at low levels, typically 37 U/ml. Elevated levels have been observed in mild inflammation of the hepatobiliary tract. Studies have shown that mucin with the CA 19-9 antigen is more common in the serum of patients with pancreatic cancer than with other gastrointestinal cancers, including colorectal cancer. It can also be detected in the bile ducts, ovarian cystadenomas, and uterine adenomas.
