Description
CA 19-9 antigen is part of many mucosal cells and the products they secrete. In healthy individuals, CA 19-9 antigen circulates at low levels usually 37 U/ml. Elevated levels have been observed in cases of mild inflammation of the hepatobiliary ducts. Studies have shown that mucin with CA 19-9 antigen is more common in the serum of pancreatic cancer patients than in other gastrointestinal cancers, including colon. In addition, it can be detected in the bile ducts, with ovarian mucinous cystadenomas and uterine adenomas.
