Description
Chlamydophila pneumoniae is an infectious agent that causes various respiratory diseases. Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection is usually asymptomatic or mild, but more serious illnesses can occur, such as community-acquired pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, and pharyngitis. Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection can also be chronic. Possible comorbidities include asthma, lung cancer, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and Alzheimer's disease. Infections can be primary, chronic, or recurrent.
Primary infection produces an IgM antibody response (within approximately three weeks) and a delayed IgA and IgG antibody response (within approximately six weeks). IgM and IgA antibody titers decline rapidly (within four to six months), while IgG levels decline more slowly. In chronic or recurrent infections, IgA and IgG levels primarily decline rapidly. A high IgA antibody titer can diagnose chronic infection, while the presence of IgG antibodies indicates a past infection and is detectable in 30-50% of serum samples collected from blood donors.
