Description
Cholesterol is an essential component of cell membranes. It forms the basis of some hormones and bile acids. It is a component of gallstones. Cholesterol is produced primarily in the liver. It accumulates on artery walls, causing atherosclerosis. In the blood, it is present as HDL and LDL cholesterol.
The importance of cholesterol testing: assessment of fat metabolism, assessment of the risk of atherosclerosis, analysis of the composition of gallstones (deposit testing).
Abnormal values: overweight, metabolic disorders, familial tendencies.
Elevated cholesterol values occur, for example, in diseases of the liver, pancreas, kidneys, obesity, hypothyroidism, diabetes, during pregnancy, and primary and secondary hyperlipidemia.
Factors that may affect the result: do not eat meals, snacks, fruits, vegetables, breath fresheners, chew gum, or smoke cigarettes.
Before the test you may only drink plain water.
You should not drink coffee, flavored water, drinks such as cola light/cola “zero”, energy drinks, or juices.
