Preparation for the study

General

The test material is blood.
The patient does not need to be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test, it is advisable to drink a glass of water or bitter(unsweetened) tea.

Important

Before taking blood, avoid eating excessive fat, before not taking cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Description

Cholesterol is an essential component of the cell membrane. Some hormones and bile acids are formed on its basis. It is included in the composition of gallstones. Cholesterol is produced mainly in the liver. It is deposited on the walls of vessels, causing atherosclerosis. In the blood as >HDL and >LDL - cholesterol.
Importance of cholesterol testing: assessment of fat metabolism, assessment of atherosclerosis risk, analysis of the composition of gallstones (examination of deposits).
Abnormal values: overweight, metabolic disorders, family tendencies.
Elevated cholesterol values occur, for example: in diseases of the liver, pancreas, kidneys, obesity, hypothyroidism, diabetes, during pregnancy, primary and secondary hyperlipidemias.
