Preparation for the examination
General
- The material for testing is blood.
- The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.
Description
Fats are transported in the blood bound to proteins (lipoproteins). HDL – high-density lipoproteins.
The importance of HDL cholesterol testing: assessing the risk of atherosclerosis and its consequences, such as stroke and myocardial infarction. Monitoring treatment with cholesterol-lowering medications.
Abnormal values: in overweight individuals, type II diabetes, alcohol abusers, hypertension, familial predisposition to low HDL levels, and in women, the protective effect of estrogen.
Elevated values occur, for example, in lipid disorders, atherosclerosis, with intense and irregular physical activity, and after taking lipid-lowering medications.
