Preparation for the study

General

The test material is blood.
The patient must be fasting, at least 12 hours after eating the last meal, unless otherwise instructed by the doctor (e.g., performing the test after a meal)
Only plain water or bitter (unsweetened) tea can be drunk before the test.
Do not drink coffee, flavored water, cola light/ cola "zero" drinks, energy drinks, juices.
Do not eat meals, snacks, fruits, vegetables, breath freshening candies, chew gum, smoke cigarettes.

Description

Transported fats are in the blood bound to proteins (lipoproteins). HDL - high-density lipoproteins.
Importance of HDL cholesterol testing: assessing the risk of atherosclerosis and its consequences like stroke and myocardial infarction. Monitoring treatment with cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Abnormal values: in overweight people, type II diabetes, alcohol abuse, hypertension, family tendency to low HDL values, in women protective effect of estrogens.
Elevated values occur, for example: in lipid disorders, atherosclerosis, with high and irregular physical activity, after lipid-lowering drugs.
