Description
Chromogranin A is a protein (glycoprotein) considered a tumor marker. It is produced in the cells of endocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. Chromogranin A concentration, along with other tests, is used to determine the endocrine nature (carcinoid, pheochromocytoma) of tumors located in the stomach, intestines, or pancreas.
The test is ordered in the case of:
• Pheochromocytoma is suspected as a cause of secondary hypertension; this is evidenced by sudden, large increases in blood pressure, combined with pale skin and a rapid heart rate. This is a benign tumor usually located in the adrenal medulla.
• Suspected neuroendocrine tumor of the gastrointestinal tract; abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea indicate such a diagnosis.
• Monitoring the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors.

Symptoms that may be caused by neuroendocrine tumors include:
• increased heart rate,
• high blood pressure,
• sudden redness of the face and neck,
• nausea,
• vomiting and diarrhea,
• coughing and wheezing.
