Description
An enzyme that exists in several forms (isoenzymes) in the cardiac and skeletal muscles.
CK enters the bloodstream in increased amounts during muscle cell damage, for example, during a heart attack or intense training.
Elevated levels are also observed under the influence of certain medications, after epileptic seizures with generalized convulsions, after extensive surgery, childbirth, and after trauma with massive muscle damage.
Significance of the test: a diagnostic test helpful in diagnosing myocardial infarction. If elevated CK values are detected, CK-MB (cardiac fraction) is measured to determine the enzyme's origin (cardiac or muscle). It
is one of the tests performed as a screening test in newborns.
Abnormal values: in muscle tissue damage, during intense training, crush injuries, infections, certain muscle diseases, and myocardial infarction.
