Description
CK-MB is an enzyme with a molecular weight of 84,000, which constitutes a significant portion of the creatine kinase present in cardiac muscle tissue. CK-MB is also found in a number of other tissues, although in significantly smaller amounts. The appearance of CK-MB in serum, in the absence of significant muscle injury, may indicate myocardial damage and, consequently, myocardial infarction. Myocardial infarction is defined as the death of myocardial cells due to prolonged ischemia. The magnitude and temporal nature of the increase and subsequent decrease in CK-MB concentration can be helpful in determining the time of infarction and assessing its extent, as well as in noninvasive assessment of reperfusion. Because CK-MB is nonspecific for cardiomyocytes, monitoring the dynamics of changes in this enzyme concentration is recommended. The increase in CK-MB mass occurs within 3 to 8 hours. from the onset of clinical symptoms of infarction, maximum in the period of 9 – 30 hours, normalization after 48 – 72 hours.
