Description
CK-MB is an enzyme with a molecular weight of 84,000 that makes up a significant portion of the creatine kinase present in cardiac muscle tissue. CK-MB is also found in a whole range of other tissues, although in much smaller amounts. The appearance of CK-MB in serum, in the absence of serious muscle injury, may indicate myocardial damage, and thus myocardial infarction. Myocardial infarction is defined as the death of myocardial cells due to prolonged ischemia. The magnitude and temporal nature of the increase and subsequent decrease in CK-MB levels can be helpful in determining the time of infarction onset and assessing its extent, as well as useful in non-invasive reperfusion assessment. Because CK MB is nonspecific to cardiomyocytes, it is recommended to monitor the dynamics of changes in the concentration of this enzyme. The increase in the level of CK-MB mass occurs 3 to 8 hours after the onset of clinical signs of infarction, with a maximum at 9 to 30 hours, normalization after 48 to 72 hours.
