CMV (Cytomegalovirus) IgG

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus from the herpes family that can cause serious illness in both children and adults. CMV resides in the human body for many years and can be transmitted to others. Infections with the virus are quite common; 60 to 85% of the population have been infected, but in most cases, the infection is asymptomatic. One to 3% of women are infected during pregnancy, and in one in two cases, the infection is passed on to the fetus. Infection is most often asymptomatic, but in about 5% of cases, the consequences can be very serious: hepatosplenomegaly, hydrocephalus, microcephaly, and prematurity. Fetal death is common. Even in cases of asymptomatic infection, approximately 10% of children experience serious sensory symptoms, such as deafness or partial or even complete blindness. Detection of anti-CMV IgG antibodies can be useful in estimating the patient's immunoserological status.
IgG antibodies indicate a history of infection.
