Important

Factors that may affect test results: gammopathy, especially monoclonal IgM gammopathy (e.g., Waldenström's macroglobulinemia), may cause unreliable results. Dyslipidemias,
clinical conditions with elevated rheumatoid factor (RF) concentrations > 550 IU/ml.
Note:
Dehydration, diet, alcohol, intense exercise, or sample collection method may also affect results. Results should be considered in conjunction with other data, such as clinical symptoms, results of other tests, or clinical diagnosis.
Interference from medications or endogenous substances may affect the obtained results.
A detailed list of interfering substances is available from the laboratory upon request (manufacturer's instructions).

Description

CRP is a protein produced in the liver and belongs to the group of "acute phase proteins": it binds to the cell membrane of pathogenic microorganisms (pneumococci). It precedes the occurrence of elevated ESR values in inflammatory and neoplastic processes; it normalizes more quickly than elevated ESR values during the healing process. By binding to pathogenic microorganisms, CRP "marks" them for phagocytes. The importance of the test: a test designed to confirm and monitor the course of acute inflammatory diseases, neoplastic processes, and diseases associated with tissue destruction. Differentiation between bacterial and viral infections (viral infections may only show a slight increase in CRP). Abnormal values: in primarily bacterial infections and in diseases associated with tissue damage.
Factors that may influence the test result:
Elevated CRP causes inflammation in the body.
The test results may also be influenced by: injuries, surgical procedures, autoimmune diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis), stress, intense physical exercise, steroid drugs, immunosuppression, and a high-fat diet.

Ordering a test means consenting to its performance using the immunoturbidimetric method.
