Description
CRP is a protein formed in the liver, belongs to the group of "acute phase proteins": it binds to the cell membrane of cells of pathogenic microorganisms (pneumococci). It precedes the onset of elevated ESR in inflammatory processes and cancer; it normalizes faster than the elevated ESR in the healing process. CRP binding to cells of pathogenic microorganisms "marks" them for phagocytes. Importance of the test: a test to confirm and monitor the course of acute inflammatory diseases, neoplastic processes, as well as diseases proceeding with tissue destruction. Differentiating between bacterial and viral infections (with viral infections only a slight increase in CRP. Abnormal values: in mainly bacterial infections, in diseases proceeding with tissue damage.
Factors that may affect the outcome of the study:
Elevated CRP causes inflammation in the body.
Trauma, surgery, autoimmune diseases (e.g., RA), stress, intense exercise, steroid drugs, immunosuppression, and a high-fat diet can also affect the test results.
