Description

Cytodiagnostics plays a significant role in the diagnosis and prevention of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix. The primary purpose of the test is to detect precancerous lesions and early stages of cancer; glandular lesions can also be detected. The most commonly used nomenclature system for cytology is the Bethesda (SB) two-stage system (LSIL, HSIL).

LSIL refers to low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (low-grade dysplasia).

HSIL refers to high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL), which are pre-invasive carcinoma.
