Description

Coagulation factor II (prothrombin) is a protein produced in the liver with the help of vitamin K. It is a precursor to thrombin, a key enzyme involved in coagulation. This test is performed to diagnose coagulation disorders. Factor II deficiency can be caused by severe liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, or autoantibodies. Symptoms of prothrombin deficiency include tendency to bruise, bleeding from mucous membranes, prolonged bleeding after procedures, and heavy menstrual bleeding. Elevated prothrombin activity can lead to venous thrombosis.
