Description
Factor V, also known as proaccelerin, is a protein that is one of the plasma clotting factors involved in the coagulation cascade. It is produced in the liver and circulates in the blood in an inactive form. During blood clotting, factor V is activated. Activated factor V accelerates the conversion of factor II (prothrombin) to active thrombin. This produces fibrin, which, together with platelets, forms a clot. Mutations in the gene encoding factor V (Leiden mutation) are one of the main causes of thromboembolic lesions. Factor V deficiency manifests itself through increased bleeding, particularly after surgical or dental procedures, a tendency to bruise, and a risk of hemorrhage.
