Description

Factor XI is a protein composed of two chains linked by a sulfide bridge. Only its dimeric form can be secreted from the cell. The factor is produced in the liver in an inactive form (proenzyme). Its activation occurs mainly in the presence of active factor XII (XIIa), an enzyme - thrombin. Factor XI circulates in the blood in complexes with high-molecular-weight kininogen.

Inhibitors of factor XIa are antithrombin , alpha-1 antitrypsin, C1 inhibitor, alpha-2 antiplasmin. Congenital factor XI deficiency (hemophilia C) is rare. Factor XI deficiency results in bleeding, due to dental or surgical procedures or trauma. In women, it can manifest as heavy bleeding during menstrual periods.

The test is performed in case of inconsistent results of basic coagulation tests: abnormal APTT and normal PT, and in case of abnormal bleeding in the subject's clinical history.
