Description
Factor XII (FXII, Hageman factor) is a glycoprotein produced in the liver in an inactive form. The enzymes that activate FXII are kallikrein, FXIa, plasmin, and trypsin. The main inhibitor of FXII is C1 esterase inhibitor.
It is a so-called contact factor, which, as part of the coagulation system, participates in the formation of bonds with phospholipids.
Causes of decreased FXII activity include:
• Thrombosis
• Nephrotic syndrome
• States of increased fibrinolysis
• Congenital FXII deficiency
Causes of increased FXII activity include:
• Diabetes
Reduced FXII activity is usually detected incidentally in people with significantly prolonged aPTT and is not associated with an increased risk of bleeding or thrombosis. In such cases, aPTT cannot be used to monitor unfractionated heparin treatment; anti-Xa activity should be measured.
