Preparation for the examination

General

  • The material for testing is blood.
  • The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.

Important

Samples brought from outside are not accepted for testing.

> The test should not be performed in patients taking high molecular weight heparin because it affects the test in a way that prevents proper interpretation.

> If the patient is treated with low molecular weight heparin, the last dose can be taken up to 12 hours before blood sampling

> If the patient is taking oral anticoagulants, the test can be performed 7-14 days after discontinuing the drug and/or when the INR value is below 1.5.

Description

Lupus anticoagulant (LA) is an antibody against the body's own phospholipids and/or phospholipid-related proteins, synthesized by the human immune system. Its presence in the patient's blood increases the risk of blood clots in the veins and arteries, as phospholipids play a crucial role in the blood clotting process. These clots can block blood flow in various parts of the body, causing strokes, pulmonary embolisms, heart attacks, deep vein thrombosis (usually in the lower limbs), and recurrent miscarriages, especially in the second and third trimesters (possibly related to placental clots).
Lupus anticoagulant testing is performed in patients who have had a thrombotic episode of unknown cause, in patients with recurrent miscarriages and/or with a prolonged aPTT, as well as in patients with suspected autoimmune disease—mainly systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), antiphospholipid syndrome, or mixed connective tissue disease. Less frequently, lupus erythematosus (LA) testing is ordered to determine the cause of a positive VRDL/RPR test result for syphilis (anticardiolipin and LA antibodies produce false-positive results in these tests). These antibodies may also be present in individuals infected with HIV, in inflammatory conditions, in cancer, and in individuals treated with phenothiazines, procainamide, or fansidar. They are also present in approximately 1-2% of healthy individuals without known risk factors.
