Description

The test is performed to determine DHT excess or deficiency in men and women.

Indications for this test include androgenetic alopecia in men, hirsutism, menstrual disorders, and polycystic ovary syndrome in women. Infertility and hypogonadism in both sexes, acne and seborrheic dermatitis, and sexual development disorders in children.

Dihydrotestosterone, alongside testosterone, is a potent androgen. It is secreted by the testes, ovaries, and adrenal glands, and also originates from peripheral conversion of precursors.

It is produced by the action of the enzyme 5-α-reductase from testosterone and is 2-6 times more active than testosterone. The enzyme 5-α-reductase is found primarily in the penis, scrotum, prostate gland, skin, and liver.

In utero, DHT is essential for the differentiation of the external genitalia. During male puberty, it is responsible for the development of most secondary sexual characteristics. In adulthood, DHT influences the normal mass of the prostate gland and participates in the production of seminal fluid. Overproduction of this androgen can occur in men over 50 and can lead to prostate enlargement and the development of prostate cancer.
