General

The test material is blood.
The patient does not need to be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test it is advisable to drink a glass of water.

Description

The test is performed to determine excess or deficiency of DHT in men and women.

The indications for the test are primarily androgen-type alopecia in men and hirsutism, menstrual disorders, polycystic ovarian syndrome in women. In both sexes, infertility and hypogonadism, as well as acne and seborrheic dermatitis; in children, disorders of sexual development.

Along with testosterone, dihydrotestosterone is one of the potent androgens. It is secreted by the testes, ovaries and adrenal glands, and comes from the peripheral conversion of precursors.

It is formed by the 5-α-reductase enzyme from testosterone and has 2-6 times the activity of testosterone. The 5-α-reductase enzyme is found primarily in the penis, scrotum, prostate gland, skin and liver.

DHT in fetal life is essential for the differentiation of the external genitalia. During male puberty, it is responsible for the formation of most secondary sexual characteristics. In adulthood, DHT affects the normal weight of the prostate gland and participates in the formation of seminal fluid. Overproduction of this androgen can occur in men over the age of 50 and can lead to prostate hypertrophy and the development of prostate cancer.
