Description

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of the most common human Herpes-type viruses. It causes infectious mononucleosis, a disease characterized by fever, pharyngitis, enlarged lymph nodes, and often an enlarged liver and/or spleen.

The immune response to EBV infection is characterized by the production of antibodies against VCA capsid antigen, nuclear antigens (EBNA) and early antigens (EA).

The EBV Euroline test is used for the qualitative determination of human antibodies to 5 different EBV antigens: VCA gp 125, VCA p19, EBNA-1, p22 and EA-D in serum for the diagnosis of Epstein- Barr virus infections (infectious mononucleosis, Burkitt's lymphoma, nasopharyngeal cavity cancer). It is based on recombinant and native, highly purified antigens and allows differentiation between acute and past infection in a single reaction.

Markers of the late phase of infection are IgG class antibodies directed against VCA gp 125 and/or p19, as well as EBNA-1 antibodies. p22- antibodies also indicate the late phase and appear in the case of secondary loss of anti-EBNA-1 antibodies.

Characteristic of primary infection is the presence of IgG and IgM class antibodies against VCA gp 125 and/or p19 antigens. EA-D antibodies may also be present in early infection.
