Description

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of the most common human viral

Herpes. The virus is transmitted through saliva, droplets, and also through blood transfusions

and organ transplantation. The Epstein-Barr virus causes infectious mononucleosis (a disease

Pfeiffer's disease), a disease with fever, pharyngitis and lymphadenopathy, often also

with enlargement of the liver and spleen, rarely with a rash. When the infection first occurs

in childhood, it is usually asymptomatic.

The main goal of EBV diagnosis in people with a healthy immune system is to distinguish

between recent and past infection. Various serological methods are used for this purpose.

The immune system of a healthy person is able to quickly fight off the reactivation of the virus.

However, in people with a weakened immune system (e.g. during immunosuppressive therapy

after organ transplantation or infected with HIV) EBV can spread in

uncontrolled manner and cause severe lymphoproliferative disorders.

The immune response to EBV infection is characterized by the production of antibodies

against EBV antigens: virus capsid antigens (VCA), antigens

nuclear antigen (EBNA) and early antigen (EA).
