Description

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of the most common human herpes viruses. The virus is transmitted through saliva, respiratory droplets, and also through blood transfusions
and organ transplants. Epstein-Barr virus causes infectious mononucleosis (Pfeiffer's disease), an illness characterized by fever, sore throat, and lymphadenopathy, often accompanied by enlargement of the liver and spleen, and rarely by a rash. When infection first occurs in childhood, it is usually asymptomatic.
The primary goal of EBV diagnosis in people with healthy immune systems is to distinguish between recent and past infections. Various serological methods are used for this purpose.
The immune system of a healthy person can quickly combat viral reactivation.
However, in individuals with compromised immune systems (e.g., those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy after organ transplantation or infected with HIV), EBV can spread uncontrollably and cause severe lymphoproliferative disorders.
The immune response to EBV infection is characterized by the production of antibodies against EBV antigens: viral capsid antigen (VCA), nuclear antigen (EBNA), and early antigen (EA).
