Preparation for the examination
General
- The material for testing is blood.
- The patient does not need to fast. It is recommended to drink a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before the examination.
Specific for women
- Blood should be collected between days 3 and 5 of your menstrual cycle, unless your doctor recommends otherwise.
Description
FSH is a sex hormone produced in the anterior pituitary gland and exhibits periodic activity dependent on the hypothalamus. In women, FSH influences the menstrual cycle by stimulating the growth and maturation of the ovarian follicle (Graafian follicle), while in men (in conjunction with testosterone) it regulates sperm formation by stimulating spermatogenesis. The importance of FSH testing: diagnosing delayed puberty, menstrual cycle disorders, and spermatogenesis disorders in men. Abnormal values: in patients with anorexia and bulimia, as well as in states of extreme malnutrition and emaciation, in premature menopause, and in disorders of the anterior pituitary gland.
