Preparation for the study
General
- The test material is blood.
- The patient does not need to be fasting.About 30 minutes before the test, it is advisable to drink a glass of water or bitter(unsweetened) tea.
Detailed for women
- Blood should be drawn between the 3rd and 5th day of the menstrual cycle unless otherwise instructed by the doctor.
Description
FSH is a sex hormone produced in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, and exhibits periodic hypothalamus-dependent activity. In women, FSH affects the menstrual cycle-stimulates the growth and maturation of the ovarian (Graaf) follicle, while in men (together with testosterone) it regulates sperm formation-stimulates spermatogenesis. Importance of FSH testing: diagnosis of delayed sexual maturation, menstrual cycle disorders, disorders of spermatogenesis in men. Abnormal values: in patients with anorexia and bulimia, as well as in states of extreme malnutrition and cachexia, in premature menopause, in diseases of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland.
